In the final scene, the survivors "escape" only to be dragged into a sterile, high-tech laboratory. A hologram of Chancellor Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson) delivers the devastating truth: The sun has fried the Earth (Solar Flares), a deadly virus called the Flare has turned most of humanity into homicidal zombies (Cranks), and the Gladers—all immune to the virus—are the test subjects. The Maze was designed to study their brain patterns to synthesize a cure.
The supporting cast is equally stellar. Will Poulter is chilling as Gally, the antagonist who worships the Glade’s brutal rules. Thomas Brodie-Sangster (as the genius cartographer Newt) brings a weary, melancholic leadership, while Kaya Scodelario (as Teresa, the only girl) arrives with a terrifying message: "Everything is going to change." In an era dominated by green screens, director Wes Ball made a radical choice. While the Grievers were CGI, the Maze was practical.
