During Ganesh Chaturthi, the extended family gathers to make modaks (sweet dumplings). The aunties compete for the title of "Best Dough." The uncle sneaks a raw ball of dough when no one is looking. The children are covered in flour. The kitchen looks like a bomb hit it. When the offering is finally made to the god, the family doesn't just pray; they celebrate surviving another year together. Part VI: The Evening Unwind – TV, Gossip, and Dinner By 9:00 PM, the family collapses back into the living room. The television is on. Almost universally, it is tuned to either a cricket match (if the men are in charge) or a saas-bahu soap opera (if the women are in charge).
