The Yugoslav Wars, which lasted from 1991 to 2001, provided Ulemek with the perfect environment to unleash his brutality. Alongside his Serbian Guard unit, he participated in numerous atrocities, including massacres, ethnic cleansing, and forced displacement of civilians.

Ulemek's trial began in 2002, and he was ultimately found guilty of numerous crimes. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison, but his conviction was later reduced to 20 years on appeal.
