When God of War: Chains of Olympus first launched on the PlayStation Portable (PSP) in 2008, it was heralded as a technical marvel. Fans couldn't believe how Ready at Dawn managed to squeeze a near-authentic console God of War experience into a handheld device. Yet, even the most impressive PSP titles were victims of their hardware: a low screen resolution (480x272), aggressive texture compression, and muddy pixelation that obscured Kratos’ brutal visage.
The original PSP assets are low-resolution for a reason. Kratos’ skin texture, the marble floors of the Temple of Helios, and the fiery chains of Prometheus are all stored in tiny .GIM files (the PSP’s native image format).
