In an era when "transgender" wasn't even a common term, these individuals fought police brutality not just for the right to love, but for the right to exist in public spaces. Their founding of provided housing and support for homeless transgender youth—a population still disproportionately affected by family rejection today.
As we look toward the future, the question is not whether the "T" belongs in LGBTQ. The question is whether the rest of the coalition will show up with the same ferocity that Marsha P.
