The Statistics of Survival The numbers are brutal. According to the Human Rights Campaign, 2023 was the deadliest year on record for trans and gender-nonconforming people, the vast majority of whom were Black and Latina trans women. Trans people are four times more likely to live in extreme poverty than cisgender people. 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ, and a disproportionate number of those are trans teens rejected by their families.
For decades, the acronym LGBTQ has served as a banner of unity, bringing together diverse identities under a common fight for liberation. Yet, within that alphabet, each letter carries its own distinct history, struggles, and evolution. The "T"—standing for transgender, transsexual, and non-binary people—holds a unique and often misunderstood position.
